"Problem with Contents" error text box when opening a Word 2007 document?

I recently tried to open up a document and found myself staring at an error message that says that the file couldn't be opened because there are problems with the contents. When I clicked on details, it said that "and attribute value must not contain '<'" with the location of the error in line ___ column____. It had been working fine a couple hours ago, which is what really puzzled me. Also, I restarted my computer and tried to reopen the document again, and this time it said that the file had caused a "serious error" last time I tried to open it. This is a fairly important file, so is there anyway to recover or repair it?

Yes, I've tried open and repair. It just comes up with the same error text box telling me that there is a problem with the contents.

Have you tried using Open and Repair? In the Open dialog, select the file, then click the arrow beside the Open button and, from the menu, choose Open and Repair.
