Multiple entries in Pivot filter for same data

why do I have multiple entries for the same data in my Pivot report filter.  The column is labeled "Quarter."  There are 4 quarters - 1-4 and even though the data is formatted the same (and I've changed it from general to text to number to whatever...) and I still get two sets of choices:

ALL, 1,2,3,4 and 1,2,3,4  So that to choose Quarter 1 I have to choose both "1s."  My fear is as I add data it will continue to do this ad infinitum.

Why?

In the source data, select the column containing quarters,

    Format as General,

Data > text to columns > Finish

    Then refresh the pivot table.

    Works for me.

Ouch. Something wrong there.  Should be reported to Microsoft.

If you don't want to do it yourself, let me have the relevant part of the workbook and instructions on how to reproduce it and I will pass it on to them.  My email address is on the contact page of my website.

As an alternative to text to columns, having set the number format to general, copy an empty cell, select the column of quarter numbers and Paste Special > Values, Add.
