Cannot insert objects into a PowerPoint.

I have two new machines running Win7 x64.  Once has Office 2010, the other has Office 2007 installed.

When attempting to insert PDF objects into a new PowerPoint file, I get the following error on both machines:

"The Server Application, source file, or item cannot be found, or returned an unknown error. You may need to reinstall the server application."

On the Office 2010 machine, this problem seems to be limited to PDFs. On the Office 2007 machine it was limited to PDFs at one point (as far as we can tell), but now the user has problems inserting video, excel spreadsheets... pretty much everything except images.

Any ideas?  Everything I get back in searches relates to old versions of PowerPoint, and the files they created.  These machines and their installations are all new.

Other (possibly related?) installed software:

Adobe Reader X

2011 Autodesk software (AutoCAD, Vault, Inventor, etc.)

PDF Creator (sourceforge)

Microsoft 365 and Office | PowerPoint | For home | Windows

I'm actually starting to find it's an Adobe Reader X problem.

This is my thread on their forum, where I'm hearing from people with similar problems.

Start the computer in safe mode and then try to insert the object in the PowerPoint to check if it helps.

Note: Ensure to restart the computer once troubleshooting is completed.
