Normal.dotm did not seem to be working.  Found it at appdata-microsoft-templates, but it was now normal.BAK.  Should I change the extension to dotm?

No you should not! Remove or rename the allegedly defective normal.dotm template - and this dubious BAK file. Start Word, set its option to prompt to save the normal template (and to automatically create a backup file is a sensible precaution) then close Word. Word will prompt you to save the normal template. Do so. You now have a working normal template.

I have done ALL of the things below, printed off a bunch of instructions from the links below, and I STILL cannot get the default font and default paragraph options to change and stay changed. It is still always font: calibri (body) 11 and the paragraph default options stayed the same. I have spent literally hours trying to get this changed. Any other ideas?

Note: You’ve posted your question or problem in response to a question that has already been marked as "answered" by the original poster. Doing this means you will not get as good a response as you would if you had started a new question.

The reason for this is that people answering these questions look for ones that haven’t already been marked as having been answered. Also, when you ask your own question you give information about the version of Word and your operating system that can make a difference in the answer. That said,  I don't know what you mean when you say you've done all the things printed below. There are no "things printed below."

Inability to save defaults is almost always linked to either a defective Add-In or corporate IT. Defective Add-ins is the usual suspect.

Go to http://addbalance.com/word/normaltemplate.htm for directions on how to open your normal.dotm template directly. Note - do NOT insert any text in your normal.dotm template. Try making your changes there and save the template. They should stick.

To explore why this is happening, check out what Add-Ins you have installed. You can do this on the developer tab (assuming Word 2007 or Word 2010. Don't see one? Go to Developer Tab for instructions.

In what way do you think it was not working?

If it is not present, Word will create a new one when you start it.
