OK, so the file contains a valid Chemdraw image. Try editing the image in Chemdraw in a minor way, then copying the image back out of Chemdraw and pasting into Word.

I haven't used Chemdraw for many years, now, especially after Office 2008 killed round-tripping. Perhaps someone else will wade in, but doing just a little research it looks to me like the preferred method of interoperability is  copy-paste:

http://blog.officeformac.com/an-engineering-solution-for-copy-paste-interoperability-between-office-for-mac-and-chemdraw/

which seems to be corroborated by this review from May 2011:

Also I'd think you'd have better luck over on Cambridge Software's site, where the proportion of Mac users is at least an order of magnitude higher than the proportion of posters on this site that use Chemdraw.

Silly question, perhaps, but do you own Chemdraw?

If so, can you open it directly?
