To restore the original global template (Normal.dotm) file, follow these steps:

1.    Exit all Office programs.

2.    Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.

3.    Type the following command, as appropriate for the version of Word that you are running, and then press ENTER:

ren %userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\OldNormal.dot Normal.dot

4.    Start Word.

Exit Word. Click Windows key + F. Search for normal.dot (be sure to search hidden files and folders). Rename the file you find. When you restart Word, a fresh copy of the template with factory default settings will be created.

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm for instructions for finding and renaming (or modifying) Normal.dot.

The command suggested has wrong syntax according to return from run! Any ideas?

I'm not sure why are old DOS commands being suggested when using the Windows Explorer is a perfectly suitable solution??
