When I open other word documents, they open behind the one I was working on instead of in front. How can I change this?

As I recall, the older versions of Word 2011 did that. The latest incarnation is 14.1.2 and behaves properly, at least in my Mac. Check your Word version in the main menu bar's Word > About Word. If you don't have 14.1.2, use the Help > Check for updates to bring it up.
