double click document opens word, but not document and cannot navigate with the mouse

Using Office 2003 Pro, windows xp sp3. When I double click a document, word opens, but the document does not -not even a blank document. The current workaround is to use the "Open" button - select the file and that will open the file.
Also - I cannot use the mouse to change the location of the cursor or select a word/sentence. Currently having to use the arrow keys.
Notepad and RTF are not a problem. I have run a repair to no avail.
