Why does validation drop down box get bigger

Question

Sometimes a validation drop down box I am using gets bigger every time I click the arrow to select a field from the list.  I was just in a meeting and had a spreadsheet set up on a projector.  At the beginning of the meeting the drop down box was the width and height of colun B.  1.5 hours later the drop down menu stretches from column B-M and rows 1-20 and no longer fits on the screen. 

Why does the drop down validation box get bigger?

More information:

This issuer occurs with any Excel file that has drop down lists.  I find the issue only occurs when I have more than one spreadsheet open  with a drop down menu.  Each time I click the drop down to select a value, the drop down increases in size a little.  After 15-20 clicks, the drop down list box becomes half of the spreadsheet window....or an unmanageable size and I need to close the file and go back into it, or re-size the list box.

Do you have the same issue with all the Excel files which contain data validation or only with specific file?

Did this issue occur only once during the meeting?
