Cannot edit Master Slides

I created a chart in an older version of Power Point and created a master slide. With the new version (2007) I cannot edit the master. It lets me go to it, but will not let me click on the text and edit anything. How do I edit w/o having to completely retype my document.

On the whole, the way masters are handled in 2007 and up is a nice improvement, though it causes some compatibilty issues with other versions.

Have a look here; it may help understand how things work now:

Slides, Masters, Designs, Layouts ... how do they all fit together?

I have the same issue.  I'm trying to edit the information on the master and it will not allow me to select anyhting.

I wish they didn't change the look and feel so much from 2000-2003 to 2007-2010.  I'm having trouble finding or doing anything.

By "chart" do you mean "slide" in PPT terms, possibly?

In 2007, you'll notice that Slide Master view looks quite different.  There's a main slide master at the top, then indented beneath it, there are 11 or so slide layouts.

Anything on the slide master will also appear on each of the layouts beneath it (unless you deliberately prevent it).  I'm guessing that you're working with one of the layouts but trying to edit text that's actually on the main slide master.  Click on IT, then see if you can select and edit the text.

I don't understand the link between the chart and the slide master.

Are you trying to edit a slide master or a regular slide? Generally there's no "real" text on the slide master.

Are you using PowerPoint 2007, as you mention in your question text, or 2010, as is mentioned in the "office version" information at the top of the post?
