Setting Caption Default Position to Above Selected Item

Using Word 2003 SP3.  Just upgraded from XP Professional to XP x64 Edition SP2 (clean install).

I use Word's Caption tool and prefer to have my figure numbers above the caption.  Ever time I use Word, the caption position is set to "Below selected item" and I have to change it to "Above selected item".  The position state isn't being preserved after you exit Word.

The caption position state was preserved on 32-bit Windows XP, meaning I only changed this once, and never had to change it again.  On 64-bit Windows, the position "Above selected item" is only preserved within that Word session.  If you exit Word and open it, again, the state reverts to "Below selected item"

How do I make the caption position state "Above selected item" persistent from session-to-session on x64 Windows?

Once you save the changes in Word, after closing it open Windows Task Manager. If you find winword.exe is running under Processes in Task Manager, End the Process tree and try the following steps:

1.     Click on Start> All Programs > Accessories > Run

2.     Type winword /safe

Note: add a space between winword and ‘/’

3.     Do the required changes to caption, save and close the document and reopen Word
