Document Exceeds Page Limits

While working in MS Word 2010, I keep getting error messages telling me that I've exceeded the maximum number of pages allowed.  This is on documents with no more than 15,000 words each, and in multiple documents.  It happens with documents saved as both .doc and .docx.  Some, but not all of the documents, have been accessed on both a Mac and a PC.

When I get the error message, I have no option to save, no option to close. The program freezes.  I have to force quit, restart, and I've lost everything since last time it has saved.

Any thoughts?

No, I don't think it is unreasonable to think you may have a system problem.

A quick fix could be to try doing a repair:

OK, so you can fix the problem. That is good. But like the cat, it comes back. That is bad.

WHY does it come back? What are you doing to make/let it come back? DON'T DO THAT!

The only way to make it go away permanently is to figure out what part of office configuration is saving the bad stuff on your way to figuring out what is causing it.

Something is re-infecting your installation. To make the fix you have to figure out what it is and fix the root cause. Otherwise it will continue to return.

How did you fix the problem? You did a Repair? OK, this time use the other, manual, method.

Do one step, check to see if the problem is gone, do the next step until you find out exactly where the problem is being stored. Once you find where it is being stored you can start thinking about how the change is getting in there.  Or you can tell us, and we'll do the thinking (...thinking hurtz...)

If you don't want to invest the time to do a real fix, you could get some software that takes a "snapshot" of your installation, then re-applies it when you tell it to, ie at reboot. MS used to offer something called Steady State. There is other freeware that does the same sort of thing.

I've repaired my office software twice now.  Both times, the problem was fixed for about 48 hours and then began again.  Is there a way to permanently repair the problems?

Thanks Doug.  I'm assuming because this is happening with nearly ALL of my documents, it isn't a document problem. It is a problem that has appeared since I upgraded to Word 2010.  But maybe I'm wrong in assuming there is a systemic problem?
