Hi, could you please help me

Everytime i open a doc file on the internet it opens as read only and I can't print it. It is really frustrating because the only way I can print it is if I save the file but that is going to take alot of time because I have more than 100 links of doc files I have to print. How do you get rid of the read only mod?

AFAIK, there is no restriction on printing Read Only files, only on editing them. So I gather you are actually talking about Protected View? Other settings that affect Protected View are on the File Block Settings tab. If the problem affects only .doc and not .docx files, then perhaps that is where you need to look.

Sorry i hadn't realised that I was on a word specific site. I am trying to open it in Excel.

Will transfer to Excel forum

Thank you

An xlsm file contains macros and you really therefore should save it to the local disk and then use File>Open in Excel to open it.

    Try the steps given below:

    1.       Open the Word application

    2.       Click on file->options

    3.       Trust center->Trust center settings

    4.       Protect View->uncheck the box for "Enable protected view for files originating from the Internet"

    5.       Click Ok.

    I absolutely HATE read only and I am upset that I cannot turn it OFF!

    What genius at Microsoft came up with this idea?

    Let me explain.

    As a lawyer we draft documents, send them to people get input and they are sent back. Thus we may open a document 10 times, 20 times.  And someone at Microsoft decided that every time we OPEN the document it can ONLY be opened in "read only" mode.

    So then we copy and create a new but cannot save it as the "read only document is "open" and we have to give it a new name and then close and delete and as we do this make ^&^&^& sure we do not keep the wrong version.

    The fact there is no OFF switch and there is NOTHING I can do about it makes me at time want and/or beg for a competitor who will replace Word as the software engineers seem to be afraid of becoming unemployed unless they can create something different.

    Nobody asked me, hey is this a good idea?

    IT SUCKS!

    I am amazed at all the people out there having problems and do not understand what Microsoft has done here, but it took a good program and made it crap!

    Thanks Suzanne, but no, the preview pane is not open.

    I finally found a solution elsewhere:

    Microsoft ought to fix this!
