Single click highlights more than one cells

When I click to highlight (select) a cell, occasionally more than one cells are selected, as if I was dragging the mouse, that I do not.

This happens when I'm in page layout view, and I'm working for a while in the same sheet. If I open another sheet, in the same workbook, that's in page layout view too, a single click selects one cell only. However, if I go back to the previous sheet the problem may or may not occur again (usually it does occur).

Changing to Normal view the problem disappears, however changing back to Page layout vie the problem is there again...

Sometimes, if I use the keyboard for a while the problem is solved, but in most cases I have to close and reopen excel, in order to start working "normally" again.

any suggestions?
