cannot open specified file-error in response to hyperlink

I am setting hyperlinks in a portfolio document linking to other documents in the documents folder. All work except one. That returns the error message: cannot open specified file. I have tried checking properties in case something was incompatible, but I see nothing that would seem to cause a problem. Any ideas?

We found the problem. A "#" sign in the file name was keeping the hyperlink from recognizing it.

You might try repairing the file and see if that rectifies the issue. To repair a document, select the file in the Open dialog box, click the arrow next to Open, and then click Open and Repair. If you see a list of corrected errors then try opening it again using the hyperlink.

If nothing was repaired then chances are it still won't work with the hyperlink. If that's the case, then:

    • What type of file is it? Is it a document or template?
    • Does it contain macros?
    • Are there spaces in the file name and those files do the files that work also contain spaces?
    • Where is the file located? Is it in the same folder or location as other files? If not, what happens if you either move it or create a copy of the file in the same location and try creating a hyperlink?

Ah, yes that would case the issue as well. I'm glad to hear you found the cause of the problem. Thanks for the update. :-)

If you open that particular document from the File>Open menu, does it open normally, or is there perhaps a message being displayed?
