Cannot access properties to change drop down box choices

I have a form with drop down boxes made in an earlier version, probably 2003, but now am running 2007.  When I right click the drop down box all the choices are shaded, meaning not available. The doc says compatability mode.  How can I access the list to make changes?

Try unprotecting the document:

Activate the Developer tab of the ribbon (if you don't see it : Office button > Word Options > tick Show Developer tab in the ribbon > click OK)

Click Protect Document > Restrict Formatting and Editing.

In the task pane, click Stop Protection.

The Developer tab is not displayed by default.

If you have Word 2007, go to Office Button | Word Options | Popular and check the box for "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon."

If you have Word 2010 or 2013, go to File | Options | Customize Ribbon (or right-click on the Ribbon and choose Customize the Ribbon...) and check the box for Developer under Main Tabs.

What do I do if i do not have a developer tab:

Do I need a developer's version to edit a drop down menu?

The word document I am using was supplied by other.

It does not appear to be protected, from what I can see.
