When opening an excel file with the following characteristics:

  1. office version 2007
  2. windows 7
  3. file is password protected
  4. file was forwarded from a excel 2003 user
  5. file was resaved in 2007 format
  6. file has a pivot table created by me (excel 2007)

I get error messages;

  1. "unreadable content" in file..."Do you want to recover the content of this workbook"...Yes or No...I click Yes
  2. "Excel was unable to open the file by repairing or removing the unreaable content"...PivotTable report 'PivotTable1' on '[file name.xls]Sheet1' was discarded due to integrity problems.
  3. File is open and pivot table data is shown but is not workable (no drop down arrows; acess to Pivot Table Tools etc.)

Any ideas how to fix this?  This is a file I recieve monthly.

After receiving the .xls file:

  • save it in the new format (.xlsx or .xlsm)
  • close the file
  • re-open the new file
  • create the Pivot Table (new style Table)
  • save & close the new file
