Unspecified error on installation?

So my situation is this...

I have recently bought Office 2010 Acedmic and when I try installing it from the downloaded file and it gets through the first progress bar no problem. But half way through the second one i get a message that says it has encountered an error on setup.  Thing is its not specified of what the error is... At first i thought its a bad download, so i redownloaded the installer and i still get the same error. Did i honestly waste my money on a program that wont even install???

Due note i have gone through my computer and removed any previous Office installations from previous years but still no luck. I really need to get this up and running since I will be dependant on Word, Excel, Power Point and Access for more courses.

Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated.

Hello Zarenis,

Uninstall all Office installations using the appropriate MS FixIt(s) from this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

Restart twice.

Then visit Windows Update and ensure all critical updates are installed, and any update that has to do with the Dot Net Framework.  There are at least four versions and it's best to keep all of them updated.  Missing updates to these have been known to choke Office 2010 installations.

After all updates, restart.

Finally right before another installation attempt, change your default printer to the Microsoft XPS printer if is listed as an installed printer.

Restart the computer in clean boot and then try to install Office. Some non-Microsoft services might be interfering with the installation process.

Note: Ensure to restart the computer in normal mode after troubleshooting.

As well as Dan's suggestion take a look in the Event view to see if you can locate the error associated with installation. If you can find an error code and error message, post them here. The following tip is for Vista, but is essentially the same for XP.

    Examine the Vista Event Viewer
