Powerpoint embedded video "playback error".

I have been inserting videos into my powerpoint presentations using "insert media clip" on the slide. All videos are WMV. All work when played on Windows Media Player. But, during the slide show some of them stop playing somewhere in the middle and show a "playback error".

I've just tried MPEG-4 format on the recommendation of a friend and it works as it is meant to. Hope this is the answer - I'll be trying it with more files.  The friend said avi is not a MS format.  And when I think about it, wmv is an older MS format?  So the more modern format might be the answer..........................

You may not want to buy more software but I use Applian Technologies which has a great suite for recording, splitting and for converting.  The conversion options are many and would include .wmv to .avi.    I think it is US$79 and I've got more than my money's worth out of it.

I'm going to try the .avi answer - the work around is such a pain and doesn't really work effectively in Presenter View.

I'm having the same issues, and the direction sin the link from Daniel Jackson above doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't this be a simple fix?

Daniel Jackson's solution worked for me in PPT 2010. Choose to "insert object" instead of "insert video." Then select the object, go to the "Insert" tab and click "Action." On either the "mouse click" or "mouse over" tab, select the "Object action" radio button, then choose "Activate contents" from the dropdown menu. When you go into slideshow mode, the video will open in a separate WMP window. It's not the most elegant solution in the world (and it's still definitely buggy on the part of PPT), but it works.

Try inserting the video as a Windows media player object and check.

Refer the link on how to play media clips in PowerPoint by using Windows Media Player.
