Word 2007 Style Sets Missing

Word 2007, Vista SP2, all updated.

When I click Change Styles > Style Set, I do not get the default style sets from which I can choose a style set for the document, like, Classic, Default, Distinctive, Elegant, etc. Instead, all I see is WORD TEMPLATE. Apparently, I composed my own style set a while back and applied that title. I thought that I had somehow corrupted the Normal.m template, so I deleted that and re-started Word 2007. However, this did not solve the problem. I still do not have any of the default style sets that I should have. How do I get them back and return Word to its default mode? Thanks, JM

Black Barron: The styles that are missing are the ones present in Word 2007 when new, or default. For example, when my copy of Word 2007 was new, I could open a document, click "Change Styles" then point to Style Set, and I would be presented with a menu of the following styles: Classic, Default, Default (black and white), Distinctive, Elegant, Fancy, Formal, Manuscript, Modern, Simple, and Traditional. I could then highlight one of these styles and the entire document would change to that style, allowing me to preview it.

Now, none of these default styles are present, only the WORD TEMPLATE style that I made some time ago. Because of its unusual formatting, I recognize that the "WORD TEMPLATE" style is a style that I, myself, created. However, all of the default Word 2007 styles that I had originally, and mentioned above, have vanished! I should still have these styles available to me.

One other fact that is confusing me is that, to my knowledge, the Style Sets available in Word 2007 are contained in the Normal.dotm template. I have deleted Normal.dotm and re-started Word 2007 several times. This should have repaired and rebuilt the Normal.dotm template. Now, the Style Sets available in Word 2007 when Word was new, should be back, but they are not! All I see is the style that I made, WORD TEMPLATE.

In addition, to my knowledge, when I rebuilt the Normal.dotm template, my "WORD TEMPLATE" style should NOT have re-appeared because this was not originally contained in Word 2007's Style Sets.

Maybe, I am mistaken! Maybe Word 2007's Style Sets are NOT contained in the Normal.dotm template. This would explain why rebuilding the Normal.dotm template has not brought back my missing style sets. If the styles are not contained in the Normal.dotm template, then where are they stored, and how do I get them back into my Word 2007?

Stefan Blom: I know how to run the Microsoft Office Diagnostics program from within Word and office. Is this what you are referring to? Or, is there another way to repair Word 2007 from the Control Panel? If there is another way to repair Word from the Control Panel, please explain the steps I take to accomplish this.

Black, Stefan, thank you gentlemen, for your help. I appreciate it.

    JM

Have you tried repairing the Office installation (from Control Panel)?

Were the styles you think you should be having created by you or present in the word program by default ?

What are the styles that are missing ?

Obviously, marking jmcomputer's follow-up as a proposed answer was a mistake on my part. :-(

Repairing Office "from the inside" is certainly possible, but in some cases it may work better to do it from Control Panel, by running setup, clicking Change, and choosing the Repair option. (The exact steps depend on the operating system you are using.)

Note that the built-in style sets are stored as separate files in the QuickStyles folder, located in the Program Files folder. They are not stored in the Normal template.
