Hi,

I have a customer who want to use onenote (2007/2010) to manage a large number of email (30000 - 100000), so they would like to know

1) Is there any limitation on the file size of onenote?

  1. Any max. limit of number of emails sent from Outlook?
  2. Will the performance degrade when the file size is getting bigger...

Rgds,

Ricky

Hi,  So there is no limit on the file size either on 32 bit or 64 bit, right? how about the size of a file itself larger than 2GB running on 32 bit environment?  what we have to consider when managing a large amount of document (>10GB)? Thanks!!

Ricky

No hard limits on file size, no.  The 64-bit version will handle extremely large files better than the 32-bit version.

You still haven't elaborated on what, exactly, your client wants to do this for, so color me a little skeptical that OneNote is the best solution for it.

Will it work on a technical level?  Yes.  Will it be an effective solution?  Maybe.  Depends upon what problem you're solving.

There are always file size limits, but file size limits come from the used file system , not primarily from the OS:

As the others already said: no technical problem.

Serious problems, however, with organizing and handling a storage system

for the thousands of mails with the instruments available in ON.

Just manually copying 30.000 to 100.000 mails to ON, to begin with

    {grhhh}

I can only repeat my suggestion to look for the mail client's own tools

    and for archiving systems.

Hold on here Rainald, I think it depends on what you want to do.  First of all OneNote is a perfect place to keep track of TONS of information.  I personally have sections which are over 2,000 individual pages and I believe this section (w/all embedded files) is around 800 megs and I have not problems with it.  OneNote will not load the content unless I need it and everything is indexed so I can find it right away.  And there are other notebooks we have on the team which are thousands of pages and again no problems.

So Ricky CYH you can use OneNote as a great place to store these emails.  Note however that Rainald is right that you might be more benefit from storing it in an email program so you can sort and view the emails in other ways.  However if you just want to have a repository in a shared notebook then OneNote would be great.

Short answer is that we can handle a lot with our file format so I would at least consider OneNote for this solution, but it all depends on what you need (search, views, shared writing space, sharing with others, etc).

There is no limitation for  onennote file types (.ONE).

You can send any number of email from outlook.

Yes there will be performance degrade because  as the file size gets bigger, onenote might take time for the notebook to open. To avoid this create multiple notebooks for storing mails.
