Invalid argument passed to method

I am a very experienced PowerPoint user, beta testing Office 2010.

I am having a recurrent problem with animations.  Usually when I add animation to an object it work fine.  But sometimes when I try to add animation to any object I get the error message "Invalid argument passed to method."  Once I get this error, it occurs whenever I try to add an animation, regardless of the effect.  It occurs on whatever I try to animate, be it a picture or autoshape.  And once this happens I cannot make it go away.  I even tried saving it as a new PPTX with only a single slide and I still get the error message.  Once this happens the only way I can add new animations to the existing PPSX is to open a new blank presentation, create new slides with animations, and then copy them to the large PPSX.  This is a pain and clearly not the way animations are supposed to work.

Hmmm, to check if there are any macros in the presentation, click on View, Macros.

    Interesting theory...

Under "Active Application Add-ins" it says No Active Application Add-ins

Under "Inactive Application Add-in" are listed:

    Custom XML Data

    Invisible On-Slide Content

    Off-Slide Content

    OneNote Notes about PowerPoint Presentations

    Presentation Notes

What do you suggest I do next? -KS

There are no macros in this presentation.  It is a very large presentation, containing slides pulled in many older presentations.  I suppose it is possible that a macro snuck in, but I don't use macros.

Is there someway I can tell if a presentation contains a macro I may not know about?  Or is there some way I can eliminate any hidden macros.

But even it there were macros, why would this cause a problem when I'm trying to animate objects?  I apply animations to all my presentations, and have done so since PowerPoint'97.  I have never seen this error message pop up before PP2010.

    -KS
