I downloaded the upgrade for Office 2010 Professional.  Started the upgrade program.  Put in my product key and then got the following message.

I am paraphrasing ... Another upgrade is in progress wait for that to complete...

How do I terminate the other installation -- I don't know what it is or where to find it!

i had open the regedit at the time of trying the install.the reg does not change at anytime during the process.or even after you close it down after failing to get past the start. It opens then you do the product validation ,press continue, check the box for agreement ,the it just waits fora moment then hangs with the all tooo familiar note.

Hold Windows key + R and type regedit  > hit on Enter.

Note: take backup of the registry before modifying ithttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/322756

    1.    Locate and delete the following sub key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress

    2.    Close all windows, and then restart the computer.

Now try installing Office and verify the results.

Simplest way, if it hasn't gone away by now, and you don't know what it is, just shutdown/reboot. If it is still running you will be asked if you want to shut it down.
