Table header rows work intermittently

Under the table menu->table properties, Row tab allows you to click “Repeat as header row at the top of each page” – this only works some of the time. What am I doing wrong when the row doesn’t repeat on the next page?

Ha! Writing my reply gave me an idea.  I figured out the problem.

You can't select the whole table and click "Repeat as header row at the top of each page" - that is what causes the problem.

You need to select the whole table and unclick "Repeat header row at the top of each page" - then go and select only the header row and click

"Repeat as header row at the top of each page".  That works.

Thanks for your help Sharon.

Another reason that heading rows will not repeat is if the Text Wrapping attribute for the table is set to around in the Table Properties dialog.

Omg that was exactly what I needed to know Doug. Thanks for saving me the hassle and frustration of manually repeating table headers!!!!

    Hi carmein,

As the man said "All's well that ends well"! :-)

As soon as I read your procedure in the last reply, the whole table selection rang a few alarm bells with me too. Never tried that before. Good sleuthing!

    All the best,

    Hi Carmein,

The auto "repeat as header row" is disabled if you insert a manual page break. Perhaps this is the reason when the repeat doesn't work.

I'm guessing that you have some hard page breaks in your document and that you don't have the Show/Hide characters switched on?

On that assumption, try the following:

    1. Click the Show/Hide button in the Standard toolbar (it's the one with the

symbol in it) to display your document formatting.

    1. Scroll through the document and look for ---Page Break --- at the end of a page where a table is continued.
    2. Click at the beginning of the ---Page Break --- and press Delete.

If you want to switch off the Show/Hide characters just click on the button again to hide them. Personally, I leave them switch on all the time, it takes away all the little "surprises" such as the one you are experiencing.
