Highlighting formatting corruption

I have a Surface Pro running Office 365 University, and I'm trying to use the Surface pen to highlight a word file.  After saving, closing and re-opening the file...  The highlighting is no longer straight, they have become all squiggly.  It seems like WORD makes the highlighting line as a shape that then superimposes the text.  For some reason, after saving, WORD does not maintain the configuration of the shape and it is warped when I re-open the file.  Nobody else has access to the file, it is saved locally on the surface hard drive.  There is no other corruption of the document text, just the configuration of the highlighting shapes, they go from straight to squiggly.

Please help me!
