I was writing a 30 page paper and all of a sudden it said "repaginating" and now it says i have thousands of pages and the whole paper is condensed down and footnotes are missing. How do i get the original format back? Also I had saved it as another document and every time I open it, the repaginating starts again and there are 8 pages missing.

This is a classic symptom of a Corrupt document. See the information on that page for ways that may be able to help. I'd suggest you try Procedure #2 first. Make sure you have Track Changes turned OFF.
