footnote error

Hello,

I have a problem with footnotes. Word does not allow me to put the footnotes to the end of the page, and places them below the text. I am not allowed to change the setting. I get an error message telling that the numbering should be between 1 and 16383. (i tried different numbers, none worked).

I have already added the footnotes, i only need to change settings.

I am writing a document with  book format. That is; my documents margins have different settings for odd and even pages. The document consists of a cover page, several pages for abbreviations, contents, etc., the main text, references and a few closing pages. The document also has header part throughout the main text featuring chapter name in the odd pages and section name on the evens.

When i open a blank document and try the footnote options, it works.

When i copy the whole document (including or excluding the final tabstop) to a blank page i get the same error.

When i copy only the main text; it works, but in that case i do not get header part, or the book format (i.e. word uses the standard format, odd and even pages have the same margins). When I copy this back into my file, i get the same error message.

Any help will be appreciated.

Based on your description there is a degree of corruption with the footnotes. Delete any section breaks and then copy all of the content, except for the final paragraph mark (¶), to a new document. As you have noticed, you will have to recreate section formatting such as margins and headers and footers, but there is no way around that.

I receive the error when i perform exactly those operations.

Small icon under the show notes option. in the pop up menu:

    1. if i choose bottom of the page, i get the error message.
    2. if i choose below the text, i get an error message.

Error message is the same in the both cases: Start At must be between 1 and 16383

Start at is selected as "1". I tried several other integers, none worked.

    On your solution scheme:

When i open a blank document and try the footnote options, it works.

When i copy the whole document (including or excluding the final tabstop) to a blank page i get the same error.

When i copy only the main text; it works, but in that case i do not get header part, or the book format (i.e. word uses the standard format, odd and even pages have the same margins). When I copy this back into my file, i get the same error message.

When do you receive the error?

    1. Click on the footnotes dialog box group which appears below Show Notesoption
    2. Select 'Bottom of the page' for footnotes and verify the result.

Do you have multiple sections setup in the document? If yes, copy individual section seperately into a new document without selecting the final paragraph mark.
