Hyperlinks get changed

I keep a document with links to other documents on my computer.

Practically all my files are in a subfolder of E:\0. Word keeps changing my hyperlinks so they do not work

For instance I set a hyperlink to:

E:\ToDo\Technical Tid-bits.docx

Word changes it to:

:\Users\Jackie\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Word\Technical Tid-bits.docx (my user name is Jackie)

How do I keep Word from changing the hyperlink.

How are the files hyperlinked?

Are the files saved locally or on an external drive?
