Large Word Document is crashing

My large word doc (3 MB - 500 pages) is trying to crash. It scrolls down but blurs if I try to scroll up. It also wanted to constantly repaginate, though it has stopped that. I was able to retrieve the information in the document and email it to myself but am worried about my other documents. Will this crash affect the other documents? Is there a size limitation on Word docs? Any way to prevent crashes? And how to fix this crashed document if possible? Must I simply break the document into different Word doc files? (Part 1, Part 2, etc.? Is my version of Office just outdated?  I'm using Office Professional 2003.

How did you "retrieve" the information?

Size wise you are no where near the limit.

I've got a file just under 50MB that I can edit in 2003 just fine. I also have several in the 30-40MB range. Page counts I have docs in the 1000 - 1500 page range.

You don't "Have to" replace 2003 if it still has all of the features you need. There are many people who are still using older versions.

A file crashing shouldn't (but may) affect your Office / Word installation. If you are concerned, you can do an Office Repair. It won't hurt anything if you do it.

Create a new file and copy the contents to it or use open repair feature.
