Insert key does not toggle insert/typeover mode in Word over RDP

I have an issue.

Working in Word 2010 (Actually in all Windows Apps)  I'm well aware the Insert key functionality is now disabled by default so users do not accidentally enter typeover mode.  Unfortunately some users prefer to edit that way.  So simple solution, Open Word 2010 options and enable the traditional Insert key functionality.  I wish Microsoft had simple made this a global default in Windows and that there was a way to enable it globally for all applications but I digress.

But, when accessing the desktop machine from home Via RDP (Win7 to Win 7) the insert key does not function at all, even in Word.  It's as if RDP is not passing the Insert button as a keypress to the host desktop.  So the user becomes unable to change the state of function of the insert key.

Anyone with any experience with this issue that has a solution?

I'm not familiar with RDP, so I don't know whether it's keyboard only or can use mouse actions. If you can use a mouse, can you double-click on Insert on the status bar? This would help only in Word, of course, but once it's changed in Word, would that status not be enabled for other apps?
