cannot remove page border on document received

I received a document from a client which I am formatting, which runs several hundred pages. I do not know what version Word he used.

It has a border on each page. I go to FORMAT > DOCUMENT and under the borders tab, it show that a border is selected. I deselect it by clicking the little icon at the top of the small pix of borders... and it appears to be off. I return to the page and it is off. I work on the document, save it, but when I reopen the document, there it is again.

I saved back to .doc and it goes away! and stays away! but in .docx it returns every time I open it.

The THEME is set to OFFICE.

I have been trying to figure this out for quite a while...

Thanks.

When you set the border to None [which you can get to a bit faster via Format> Borders & Shading] make sure the Apply to in the lower right corner is set to Whole Document.

Have you examined the Header to see if it's actually a background graphic?

If it continues to reappear you'll need to provide details about how the document is constructed. Also, is Track Changes being used? More information would be helpful.
