After I applied a macro the "Format Painter" option in excel does not work anymore, though the option is active in excel. Also all the paste special options are disabled. What is the solution to this problem?

I had the same problem. Didn't notice the issue with the Format Painter until you mentioned it (don't normally use it), but I've lost most of the 'Paste Special' functionality, which I use heavily. When selecting 'Paste Special', the only options avilable to me were 'HTML Format', or 'Unicode Text'. I looked around variouis forums (including this one) without finding a difinitive answer. I then attempted a 'Repair Installation', but found the option was not available. Windows would only offer the option to uninstall Offce 2007.

That's it. That's all I've done. I then opened Excel, expecting the problem to persist, but found that everything works normally now. I can use the Format Painter, and have the full range of options available when selecting 'Copy' - 'Paste Special'. I have no further explanation.
