opening .tmp files

I'm using office 2011 for Mac.  I have been working with a document in Word, editing etc.  I made some changes, and kept clicking the save icon.  When I tried to re-open my latest edits, the named document opened with a different format and several files with a .tmp extension appeared in the "open recent" and when I click, I get a message that Word cannot find the file, would I like to open it myself.  the options are cancel and yes.  Either way, the file disappears.  I have tried looking for them in Finder with no success.  This is not the first time this has happened.  I thought that once a file was saved  using the 'Save as' you could just keep updating with the 'save' icon.  This is wasting a lot of valuable time.  Can anyone help?

You may check the location where the document was saved in and see if the document is available.

If searching for the document in finder only gets the document that does not contain what you had worked on, than it is likely that the document was not saved.

Where did you originally save the file?  Was it to your local drive or somewhere else?
