Insert at cursor position - Word 2010

I use MS Word 2010 to create multi-page publications with text, graphics, images, columns, section breaks, custom page numbering, Table of Contents, Index, etc.

I have been having such a problem with inserting images and graphics in my documents, it's driving me mad!  I put the cursor where I want the image to appear.  It ALWAYS gets placed somewhere else in the document, rearranging everything that is already there, sometimes several pages away.  It is definitely a "drag" (pun intended) to get that image where it belongs.

I can insert the image directly, or I can use one of the Smart Arts or a Smart Shape, but it's always the same thing.  The Smart Art or Smart Shape will also get placed somewhere unwanted in the document.  Positioning ignores the cursor completely.  These items are always part of the main body of the document all inside the same section.

Can anyone help me?

Thank you Doug!  You're the greatest!  I just made the adjustment in the settings and this really saves me a lot of time and effort and my sanity!
