That is correct, no special effects for buttons. Have a look at...

In Access 2010 can you not add a special effect to a button? I would like for it to be raised, but the special effects on the button properties is not available.

Use the "Format" ribbon tab and you will find all you require for formatting the button
It not quite clear what you mean by special effect?
The older effects don't do anything.
However, in Access 2010 the new style effects for buttons has an outstanding list of choices and effects for a button including may raised styles.
And here are a few of the ribbon options for buttons.
Not only can you create rasied effects, but you not even restriced to square and can even now create round and oval buttons without ANY kind of third party tools.
So, the above allows one to create buttons like this:
or this:
And the above options work equally well in VBA client or for web based forms.
And as noted these buttons quite much have full web style effects such as shadow, glow, and even hover effects to change color.
If the options like those above screen shots are disabled, then perhaps you are using a mdb format in place of the new accDB format which is required for all these new amazing effects.
So you have what some would say too many choices and I think there is every kind of possible "raised" effect you could ever want.

Hi. After much looking I found that there is a Special Effect option on the pop-up menu for a button. (Right-click on the button in design view to get the menu.) It has apparently moved here from the Properties window, where it used to be. The option is disabled for me on a particular button at the moment. . . I'll have to look more to figure out why.
