Stop Excel from maximizing windows

How do I stop Excel from maximizing windows? When I open Excel, it is not maximized, but if I create a new document or open any existing document, it maximizes. I un-maximize the workbooks and save them, but next time I open them, they maximize again as they are opened. There are no macros anywhere that I am aware of.

I have this problem too - in a clean Office 2013 installation on a new copy Windows 7 Pro (64b).   Even just opening Excel via the desktop short-cut with no opened file, I get a maximised Excel window.  I't seriously annoying when you have lots of open windows an a large monitor!

Repair Office 2010 installation and check. Refer to the link mentioned to repair Office 2010 installation:

    1. I see the ribbon. It is at the normal place at the top and not maximized.
    2. When I open Excel first, no file, Excel is not maximized. As soon as I open any file, Excel maximizes. If Excel is not open to start with and I double-click a file to open it, Excel opens maximized. I cannot drag the edges of the window because the window is maximized. I can click the Restore Down button on the top right and then I can resize the window. As I said in the original post, I have done this though with no effect.

    Hi,

As I understand you want to open the Excel formats with minimized windows.

I would like to ask a few questions on the issue:

    1. When you double click on open the Excel spreadsheet do you see the ribbon in Excel or is the ribbon minimized?
    2. Open an Excel file; manually drag the edges of the window to minimize the spreadsheet save the file and re-open it and check.

Provide us more information to assist you further.

    Thank you.
