Compress button has disappeared

In Word 2011, the compress picture button has disappeared from the Format picture menu, and there seems to be no way to get it back. I've tried to customize the toolbar, but the compress button is not in the list of available buttons. Any advice how to get it back? I have some large JPG files I'd like to shrink.

You're most likely in a document saved in the deprecated .doc file format [Compatibility Mode displayed in the title bar] which does not support the features. Save the document in .docx format & the features will be available.

Bob J.

The compress button appears automatically when you click once on a picture to select the picture. You'll see a new purple Format Picture tab appear in the Ribbon. The Compress button is in the Adjust group on the Ribbon.

If you don't see the Ajust group in the Ribbon, click on the purple Format Picture tab.

You can see the button in the screen shot on this page (although the page itself is about a different topic:

I'm in the Twilight Zone on this.

New .docx document.  Latest version of Word 2011.  No compress option, no compress button whatsoever.  I've turned on the ribbon, selected the photo, and am not given the choice.

There is also no "Adjust" group in the ribbon!  Or, in the control-click context menu!

    Wondering what's going on!

I can add one wrinkle here.  My photos were .jpgs that I copied and pasted from Preview.

Stranger still, I do NOT have a Photos item in the Insert menu.

Found a work around… Had to use Insert Picture, and add another photo that way.  Then, Adjust and Compress shows up--and, with one picture selected, after picking compress, it will give you a choice of compressing ALL photos, including the ones that you had pasted in.  While doing that crashed Word, the recovered file had shrunk from 70 to 7 mb and now scrolls quickly!

So, it turns out that copied and pasted jpgs do NOT invoke a key picture commands, including adjust and compress!

I have taken all the steps described above and the compress button does NOT appear automatically. Here is a screenshot of the "Adjust" section of my Format Picture toolbar. And, yes, a picture is selected in the document.

I am in a DOCX and NO COMPRESS OPTION. This missing feature is reported all over the Internet, so I'm a bit amazed that you seem to have it in your installation.
