Excel opens files by itself!

New development:  When I open Excel, it automatically opens 8 files, always the same ones.  Some are Excel docs and others are PDF's, which come up as a bunch of code. I get messages for several of them such as "COMMENTARY on the U.docx file format is not valid"  How can I stop this?

I fixed it myself.  Under Excel Preferences, there was an item that said

"On Startup, Open..."

That box should have been blank but it showed a directory.  I don't know how that got there and I don't know how Excel decided to open only those 8 files out of several hundred but anyway, it's fixed.
