Hi,

I have tried a method to open an .exe file on my laptop and have used these steps:

*Fix-4 Fix File Association from Command Prompt Wrong File Association can cause the problem of .exe files not running on your computer.

  1. Type "cmd" in the search box just beside the Windows icon. Right Click on "Command Prompt" and click on "Run as Administrator". Command prompt will be opened as an Administrator.
  2. Now, copy and paste "assoc .exe=exefile " and hit Enter.
  3. Reboot your computer. After rebooting try running a .exe file on your computer. Check if the problem is still there or not. If the problem is still persists go for the next fix.*

My laptop now won't let me run any of my installed programs, and I cannot open Command Prompt or Registry Editor. The prompt box will appear and ask 'How do you want to open this file' and the checkbox at the bottom will ask 'always use this app to open .exe files'.

If you could provide any information on how to fix this issue that'd be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

I'd suggest restoring to a known good earlier state or clean install the operating system.

    Hi,

According to your description, you unable to open command prompt, registry or any exe files for windows 10, right?

I suggest you to boot the computer to Safe Mode and check if the issue occurs or not. If not, I would suggest you to set the computer in a clean boot state and check if it helps.

If that doesn't work, you can run system restore from a Retail Install DVD.

Hope above information can help you.
