page break inserts extra lines

When I insert a page break in a word doc, extra lines are automatically inserted at the top of the last page prior to the page break. I am not able to delete. Each time I remove the page break and then re-insert it. I get the same problem. This does not happen all the time, but in 87 pages, it has occurred 3 times. What am I doing wrong?

If Phillip's answer has not resolved it, you need to determine the cause.  There can be three:

  • Extra paragraphs, as Phillip has suggested
  • Paragraph properties of the paragraph below the page break
  • Vertically centred page formatting.

To discover extra paragraphs, turn on the non-printing display as Phillip suggested.

To look at the paragraph properties, click on the page break and use Format>Paragraph...  Look for Space Above and Space below.  A page break becomes part of the paragraph that follows it, and inherits the spacing.

To check the page formatting, use Format>Document>Layout>Vertical Alignment.  Any setting other than "top" may give you this problem.

Hope this helps

Thank you. I did have the cover sheet vertically centered. Is there any way to vertically center just one page of a 300 plus page document without that formatting affecting the entire doc?
