stencils do not save with document

Since the 2010 version, the stencils I used to create the document are not saved with the document.

Everytime I open the document I have to go and find them again.

How to:

Set the default stencils of my preference?

Retain the stencils used in the visio document so they are there when I reopen it?

this from Paul Herber

Over on the right-hand side you will see that Properties has a small black triangle next to it, click the triangle and select Advanced Properties.

At the bottom of the dialog is a tick box for Save workspace.

I searched for half an hour for this - Microsoft - I think this needs to be somewhere more findable! It's not as if the Info screen is short of space!

al

ps Paul and I agree they did a great job of hiding the workspace setup

Is there a plan B?  After finding the Advanced Properties in Visio 2010 (which I never would have found on my own), I made sure that Save Workspace was ticked, closed my stencil file, opened a later version from a different folder, saved my drawing, and opened it again.  The stencil change did not save with the drawing.

I tried it again and made sure to update the drawing so there was something else to save.  Same result, no change to the stencil.  I've checked, the drawing is not read-only; its modified date and time have changed.

    I am genuinely puzzled.

Various details:  Visio Standard 2010 (32 bit), Windows 7 Ultimate, (64 bit), everything updates automatically and so should be the latest.

    Brilliant!  Thats it.

    Thanks so much.

    To be more clear ....

Select FILE tab, and the properties drop down box is in the right navigation pane.

I searched for stencils, templates, shapes to no avail....go figure.... its burried under "Save Workspace"

Can't the default template be set to do this? I use the same stencils all the time.

Now I have to see if this is required on each of my documents. ........

    Comment to the developers:

As a long time hard core user of MS office apps....I Have to say it takes me longer to do the tasks I used to do....and can no longer understand the logical groupings in the newer ribbon environment. I find myself using the help button where I never did before....and still can not find answers such as this one. It is no longer intuitive for MS office veterans.....
