Horizontal Chart Axis Dates

Good Day -

I have a chart that the X axis is dates.  The dates can changed based on the data.  What I would like is to have the month display as J F M A M J J A S O N D, and to have below that 2012, 2013, etc.  I would also like a vertical line between Dec and Jan of repsective years, BUT the chart will likely not start in January.

Any suggestions

Thanks

Paul

Paul, just re-visting this and, as far as I can see, my website item 115 seems to give you what you want.

    Take the following actions:-

    1. Pull up my item 115 on the screen.

    2. Remove the data in cells:-

    A2

    A5

    A8

    3. Change cell B2 to read 2010.

Change cell B5 to read 2011.

Change cell B8 to read 2012.

You can change the other numbers as desired and add in months if you like.

You should now have months as the first (upper) level of the X axis and years as the second (lower) level of the X axis with a line in between Dec and Jan on this second (lower) level.

I think that the above gives you what you want.

You can do the Year and Axis line by using multi-level category labels. Use formula to make it dynamic.

The months can be done using custom number format of, mmmmm

    Example on skydrive.

I'm not 100% clear on what you are saying.

I have the chart on the screen in front of me right now.

Between each of the months on the X axis there is a vertical line (it's not random).

To clear the lines right click the X axis then:-

    Format Axis . . .

The Format Axis window should open.

In the Format Axis window click:-

    Line Color

     - on the left hand side then, on the right hand side, click:-

    No line

When I do this the vertical line in between each of the months disappears.

I don't know how to give you a line just between Dec and Jan(s).

PS On my website check out item 115 - I don't have time to play around with it right now but maybe it will give you the line between Jan and Dec that you are after.

Using your information as a starting point I have gotten very close.  What I am still challenged with is:

There is a short vertical line between the horizontal axis going down into the axis labels.  They seems to be radomly spaced.  Ideally I would be able to control these lines so that they go detween December and January.  Or what would be also be an option is a heavy line vertically through the grapth between Decembers and Januarys.

I think that there are a variety of possible ways that this could be done.

For one possible way check out:-

    http://www.pierrefondes.com/

     - item 132.

Pull up my Workbook and make the following amendments as an illustration:-

    1. Cells B2:B5 change to read 2012
    2. Cells B6:B9 change to read 2013
    3. Cells D2:F2 change to read 1

Cells D3:F3 change to read 2

Cells D4:F4 change to read 3

Cells D5:F5 change to read 4

Cells D6:F6 change to read 5

Cells D7:F7 change to read 6

Cells D8:F8 change to read 7

Cells D9:F9 change to read 8

    1. Click the vertical axis so that it's highlighted then right click and click on:-

    Format Axis . . .

The Format Axis window should open.

    1. In the Format Axis window remove the tick (check) from:-

    Logarithmic scale

     - then click:-

    Close

    1. Amend the above numbers to suit your needs.
    2. Cells C2:C9 put in the months of your choice. I used:-

    Jan

    Feb

    Mar

    Apr

    Jan

    Feb

    Mar

    Apr
