Why does Excel freeze when saving

I am running Windows 8 Pro 64 bit. After "upgrading" to WIndows 8, whenever I try to save a excel spreadsheet, it freezes (does not respond permanently) and the file I am using is gone replaced by a corrupt file and a corrupt temp file. I was on home network, but got rid of it, repaired, reinstalled, everything I can think of and the problem is still there. This computer has a good anti-virus (bitdefender) and is only online for updates and support, I do not web surf at all. Very frustrating.

I forgot to mention that I am using Office 2007 (Excel 2007) so while there are some differences in the outlined problem, there are far more similarities.

Hello, I know this post is old but we have a similar problem at our organization. We have windows 8.1 with Bitdefender as our anti-virus. Same details, excel locks up the actual xlsx file disappears and is replaced with a 2 files that appear to be a before and after snapshot of the original xlsx file. One of the files is a .tmp file and the other has no extension. Both files share the same name prefix which looks to be some GUID or Unique id for temporary file naming.

This is a work environment with a slow cautious roll-out of bitdefender, giving Windows defender to users who we have setup on Bitdefender as of yet. The people without Bitdefender never experience this problem; but my boss and I have both experienced the problem. I removed Bitdefender from my bosses computer and he has not experienced the issue since. I still have Bit defender and noticed that it happens intermittently and is not consistent. Also it does not appear to happen when working on a network drive.

So while I don't have a clear answer as to why this happens, I can say that it appears to be a problem with Bitdefender.

I sympathize.  These types of problems are nearly impossible to solve when sitting shoulder-to-shoulder at the computer, much less at arm's-length in a forum like this.  If anyone provides a solution here, it might be nothing more than a lucky guess.  And it might be just a coincidence, not a solution at all.

That said, take a look at a recent answer to a similar problem (click here) [1].  It might or might not be related to the problem you have.  The "same" symptom in two different situations might be due to two very different problems.  But it might be worth a try.
