    Hi Paul,

Thank you for asking Microsoft Community.

BEX refers to Buffer Overflow Exception. For more information on the same refer to the following link:

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc738483(WS.10).aspx

To resolve the issue, try the following steps and check if it helps:

    1. Open System by clicking on the Start button, Control Panel, System and Maintenance, and then

        clicking on System.

    2. Click Advanced System Settings.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation,

type the password or provide confirmation.

    3. Under Performance, click Settings.

    4. Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services

        except those I select.

If you have the option already selected, then you may add ‘Microsoft Word’ to the exception list. To add ‘Microsoft Word’ to the exception list, do the following:

    1. Click the "Add" button at the bottom of the screen.

    2. In the Open dialog box navigate to the folder ‘C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 14

        \Winword.exe’.

Note: If you are running on Windows & 64 bit version then browse to the location C:\Program Files

                  (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office 14\Winword.exe’.

    3. Click to select Winword.exe and then click on Ok.

Once the above steps are complete, restart the system and then try performing a mail merge.

I hope the above information helps. If you still have questions, you can always reply and I’ll be happy to assist you.

    Thanks

    Thank you for replying.

Does the problem occur when Outlook is open at the background?

Create a test Outlook profile and see if mail merge works without issues.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829918

Disable the Add-ins associated to Word and Outlook and then try performing main merge to check:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-in/access-help/view-manage-and-install-add-ins-in-office-programs-HA010354315.aspx

You may also repair Office 2010 installation and check if that helps:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/project-help/repair-or-remove-office-2010-HA010357402.aspx#_Toc269981340

    Thanks

Thank you for your advice, I thought this must be it!  However, sadly if has not made any difference other that in the error message the value for exception offset has changed: Exception Offset: 6055176b.

I should add some background to the problem.  I have Windows 7, 64 bit platform (8GB RAM).  Previously I had Office 2007 which was carefully removed using "Microsoft Fixit".  After the problem developed I did the same again for Office 2010 using the 2010 Fixit program.  I have reinstalled and done a clean boot and this error happens with no other software running other than ESET NOD32 antivirus.  Adobe Acrobat XI is also installed on the PC.

    Suggestions welcome!

Thank you for your advice.  You have proposed an alternative method.  A mail merge can also be acheived if the data is first exported to Excel.  However, I wanted to pull the addresses into Word, rather than push them out of Outlook.

Have you tried with Outlook running, before you attempt to access the Outlook contacts?
