using touchscreen to toggle checkboxes in forms

I have created a form in Word 2013 using the Surface with WindowsRT.  After restricting the editing so that users can only fill 9n the form, I cannot use the touchscreen to put a check in a checkbox or to remove it.  It only works if I use the curser.  I would like to be able to check the checkboxes when the keypad is off or folded over.  How do I make this happen?

I can't speak for Word 2013 on a Surface with Windows RT, but on a Samsung 7 Slate running Word 2013 under 64 bit Windows 7 Professional, both legacy formfield checkboxes and content control checkboxes can be checked unchecked by touching the screen.
