Unable to open data source folder to select data source when prompted

I have Windows 7 and Word/Excel 2007.  If I open a Shipping Template Word document and click Yes to run the SQL statement, I am prompted to select a data source, but the folder containing the files is not visible in the location I saved it. If I change, "All Data Sources", to "All Files", then I can find the folder. There is still a problem though. If I double click the folder to open it, Word responds as if I am saying the folder itself is the data source. I get a message box that says, "This data source cannot be opened because it is not supported by the application." Why is Word not opening the folder to let me select the Excel data source file? Why do some folders show up as a data source when "All Data Sources" is selected and not others? Folders are showing up that do not have any data sources in them. Thank you.

Normally, if you accept the SQL statement, the mail merge main document will open with the data source attached.  However if you are asked to attach the data source, expand the C: drive in the folder pane and navigate to the required folder.  You should not however double click on any folder.  A single click on a folder will open it and then you need to select the file in the folder that you want to use as the data source.

When I navigate to the location the folder is in, it is not visible initially, however, when I change "All Data Sources" to "All Files", then the folder is visible. I mention this because I can both double and single click a folder that shows up when "All Data Sources" is selected and it will open, but I cannot open additional folders that appear when I choose "All Files" even if I only single click.
