F2 edit problem in a protected sheet

I have a worksheet that is protected with cells that are not protected.  When I click in a cell that is unprotected and hit the F2 key to edit.  It doesn't allow me to see what is in the cell at the cursor location.  I have used Excel for a long time but have never seen this before.  What setting have I messed up.  I did develop the worksheet in Office 2010 and am running it in Office XP.  I don't think that is the issue, I think I have selected the wrong setting somewhere.

Unlock the sheet.

Select the "problem" cells.

Select Format | Cells...

Activate the Protection tab.

Make sure that the "Hidden" check box is clear (neither ticked nor filled).

Click OK.

Protect the sheet again.
