cross-reference problem - word inserts a page break or a section break

Question

Dear all,

Both for table and figure cross-references, when I print (or print preview), word inserts a page break. There is a page break (or a section break in some cases) between cross-reference and caption, but these need to be there.  This only occurs in some instances

• I'm not sure why, or how to avoid it. It is very anoying, and messes up some of my PhD chapters!!

What has happened is that the hidden bookmark which Word inserts when you create a cross-reference has expanded to include a manual page break. You could recreate the cross-reference or replace the manual break with "Page break before" formatting (look in the Paragraph dialog box).

To avoid the problem in the future, never add content (text, a blank paragraph/Enter) at the beginning of a cross-referenced paragraph. Instead, add content at the end of the preceding paragraph.

Actually I looked at that before. The end of that discussion was someone arranging sending their document to someone else. God knows what happened next.

Ultimately I think someone from Microsoft should offer a solution,

I totally agree with you that there is no consistency fix.
