Footnotes weird?

I sent my dissertation to an editor (I'm using Word Mac 2011) and she sent it back with editing. All the footnotes are weird now, instead of a little number followed by the copy, they each have a big number, a long space, and a box, then the copy. Each chapter is coming in that way. Any help?Please? soon?
It was the same on my PC at work.... running Windows 7 and current word...
I just found out she is using Open Office...
