Vertically aligned text box cuts off text

I have a document with 1" margins on all sides (portrait, not landscape). For the title page, I am trying to create a vertical text box that stretches from the bottom margin to the top margin (9" tall) along the left margin of the page.

When I create the text box and then size my text, the first part of the text gets cut off. It is the exact same amount of text that would be cut off at the left margin IF it was a 9" horizontal text box that was placed on the page (because it would extend past the left margin and 7" of available space). If I move the entire vertical text box to the right, the text will become visible but, of course, it is now running down the middle of the page.

Why is the left margin apparently affecting the text placed into a vertical text box (that should be governed by the top and bottom margins)?

When you choose vertical text, Word treats the object as if it were a rotated text box. When you rotate text, the left and right margins remain the same within the box relative to the enclosed text, not the external margins.

    1. Create a text box pf any size, any place on the page.
    2. Next click on the text box to activate it
    3. Then hold down Control Key while clicking on the outline
    4. Go to Format menu choose Format Shape.
    5. when window opens click on "Square"
    6. Then click advanced button
    7. adjust size and position as desired.
    8. Okay to get out of each window

I you should make height and width about a 1/4" shorter. and have it centered.
